Choose the right oil crushing machine

An oil crushing machine is indispensable to any holistic oil extraction operation. It is used in mechanical extraction to extract oil from groundnuts, sunflower seeds, copra, and other oil-bearing materials with fairly high oil content. Even when mechanical pressing is not the central method of oil extraction, an oil crushing machine is used for pre-pressing so that the oil-bearing seed, nut, or fruit expels some amount of pure oil and the feed reduces in size, becoming compact to ensure high efficiency of solvent extraction or specialty extraction.

Now, depending on what your oil product is, its desired quality, the intended scale of operations, and many other factors, the best oil crushing machine for you will differ. The oil crushing machine cost will also vary with the oil crushing machine capacity. Product quality and the need for maintenance and spare parts are also an important expense to consider while accounting for oil crushing machine price in India especially, as the tropical climate can affect equipment functioning and upkeep.

But before getting to the oil crushing machine capacity or any of these other factors, you will have to make a decision about whether you want to go for a hydraulic oil press or a screw oil press for your oil crushing needs. Unsure of what we’re talking about? Then this is just the place for you to begin your journey of finding the oil crushing machines for all your edible oil processing needs.

Hydraulic press vs screw press

These two types of oil crushing machines vary in terms of their oil extraction method, the quality of oil obtained by using them, their rate of recycling the cake residue, their applications, failure rates, and other features. Let us take a look at each of these factors, determining how and to what extent they justify a certain oil crushing machine cost.

Hydraulic oil press

Oil extraction method: Hydraulic oil press equipment uses liquid as a pressure transmission medium. It squeezes the oil-bearing material to expel oil as per the principle of liquid pressure transmission. This closed-loop system primarily comprises a hydraulic system and an oil press body; the oil crushing machinery is composed of a hydraulic pump station, control valve, electrical cabinet, motor, oil cylinder, cylinder, frame, and other components.

Oil product quality: Hydraulic oil pressing is a purely physical method of pressing or extracting oil from plant-based materials. It does not lead to energy generation in the form of heat, thereby protecting the organic components naturally present in the oil. The oil generated from hydraulic pressing is of high quality and has very few impurities, making it particularly suitable for extracting oil from crops with high oil content, like peanuts, almonds, sesame, pine nuts, walnuts, and even some animal products. The maintenance of low operating temperatures also makes hydraulic pressing the go-to choice for the production of cold-pressed oils and other cold-pressed raw materials, like those used in chemical and pharmaceutical industries.

Rate of cake residue recycling: The efficiency of an oil processing operation is determined not only by the oil yield obtained but also by the quality of the cake residue and how well it can be used to add value to other industrial processes.

Since the hydraulic press method does not involve heat when using oil crushing machines, the oil has high levels of organic components and the cake residue has high secondary value, making it highly usable in other industries and processes. Food processing companies have used cake residue from almond, walnut, groundnut and other nut oil processing to make walnut powder, almond milk, and other food products. A hydraulic oil crushing machine is particularly suited to such applications because it can control the oil output by adjusting different pressures – this gives it a distinct advantage over screw oil presses.

Applications: The oil crushing machine price in India and in other countries where oil processing is a major industry is often determined by processing capacity and suitability for particular types of feed material. For instance, some companies offer hydraulic presses only with a small processing capacity of single units, ranging from 8 kilograms/hour to 200 kilograms/hour, appropriate for small workshop production.

In general, due to their ability to preserve natural nutritional elements and flavours in edible oils, hydraulic oil crushing machines are especially suited to the production of oils and fats with special flavours like olive oil, sesame oil, walnut oil, and cocoa butter. Almond and peanut oils also often rely on hydraulic pressing.

Failure rates: Hydraulic oil presses use oil pumps and some control valves to operate. Equipment failure is most likely to be found in the seal of the pipe and the plunger. Issues such as these can be solved by replacing gaskets and other such interventions during maintenance, making the entire maintenance process easy and accessories cheap, and reducing the overall oil crushing machine cost, especially when you have an annual maintenance contract (AMC).

A final word: Hydraulic presses are advanced, efficient, small, easy to control, result in large output and are more widely used – all of these advantages put hydraulic oil crushing machine price in India a little bit on the higher side. But the oil crushing machine cost is usually worth it, no matter which country you purchase it in, because of its high efficiency, environmental friendliness, energy savings, high product value-add, no oil loss, and lack of noise during operations. The fact that no heat is used in the process and no chemicals are introduced into the oil makes it easier for oil manufacturers to charge a premium on such oils, even while eliminating the need for additional steps to clean the oil. Additionally, the ease of operations, fewer wear and tear parts, and equipment longevity make hydraulic oil crushing machines a good investment.

There are some drawbacks to hydraulic presses: leakage in one part of the equipment can make the entire machine redundant, the oil yield is lower than that derived from screw presses, and much work must be done to prepare oilseeds (crushing, frying etc.) before hydraulic pressing – you have to invest a relatively large amount for a small yield of oil.

Nonetheless, with static pressure, the mechanical friction of the oil is very small. The oil is very clean and is suitable for human consumption directly, without any treatment. This minimisation of food safety issues is ultimately the game changer in making hydraulic pressing a convenient, safe, and reliable way to go.

Screw oil press

Oil extraction method: Screw oil crushing machinery squeezes oil out of oil-bearing materials by forcing the feed through a screw shaft, generating high temperatures and pressures in the rotating extrusion process with the press ring. Screw presses are mainly made up of a control cabinet, screw shaft, pressing ring, frame, and slag outlet.

Oil product quality: High temperatures are generated during screw oil pressing due to the friction of the machine ring. This destroys some of the organic components and nutritional elements in the oil and results in an oil product with more impurities. Oil extraction via screw press must be followed by oil cooling to preserve the chemical composition of the oil.

Rate of recycling cake residue: High temperatures mean that more water in the oil will be lost during oil extraction. The moisture content of cake residue is about 10% in hydraulic pressing, while it is only 2-3% in screw pressing. This causes some losses in terms of cake residue quality and pricing.

Applications: Some screw press oil crushing machine manufacturers produce equipment with processing volumes for single machines ranging from 50 kg/hour to 800 kg/hour. This makes them suitable for large- and medium-sized continuous oil extraction plants with high overall capacities.

Providing high yield, screw presses are suited for oil extraction from soybean, peanut, and rapeseed or canola.

Failure rates: Since screw presses work by mechanical rotation, a lot of friction is generated during oil extraction. This accelerates wear and tear between the shaft and the pressure ring. When the workload on the machine is large, the pressure ring may have to be replaced as often as biannually. These high maintenance requirements and expensive accessory costs add to oil manufacturers' troubles and overall oil crushing machine costs.

A final word: While initial investment costs in screw presses are low, processing capacity can be very high. Compared to hydraulic presses, it most definitely has a higher oil yield, especially because oilseeds often undergo three to four rounds of squeezing in this process. The simple mechanical structure also means that screw presses don’t malfunction easily. Finally, their multifunctionality means that one piece of equipment can process soybean, peanut, rapeseed, cottonseed, and many other oils.

Beyond oil crushing machine capacity and type…

Beyond hydraulic vs screw press, there are several factors to consider when selecting your oil crushing machine. These include the size or dimensions of the equipment relative to the land availability for your plant, the weight of the machinery, its maximum working pressure, heating power, heating temperature, the feeding capacity of the barrel, the diameter of the oil cake, capacity in terms of kilograms per hour, motor power, and oil yield ratio, which will differ based on the feed you are using.

At the end of the day, making a decision about a piece of equipment goes beyond just oil crushing machine cost. It involves thorough research of not only processes and technologies but also the suppliers in the market, raw material availability and suitability, the product quality demanded by consumers, and beyond. This article is only an introduction to a long journey in understanding the entire landscape of oil crushing machines, their features and applications, and the latest technologies being used in oilseed processing.
